You'll Pay the Price for a Bargain Camera

Article: You'll Pay the Price for a Bargain Camera

Summary: At one time, a good rule of thumb for the pricing of a digital camera was $100 per megapixel. But that bit of popular wisdom lost its applicability as the popularity of these cameras has soared. A number of new entrants into the market boast three-megapixel resolutions at just about the old C-note tidemark. Some are from familiar brands, like Olympus, while others originate with less well-known nameplates like Concord and DXG. One way camera makers reduce costs while boosting megapixels is to skimp on a camera's optics. Snapshots taken with a digital zoom -- especially if the zoom is at its maximum focal length -- tend to lack definition. Overall, the $100 per megapixel rule no longer applies both on the highend of the market and the low end. Research is important when deciding to purchase a digital camera.

The general rule that you get what you pay for, however, still applies.

Yeah, I try to stick with a well known high reputation brand. Thank goodness for www.eopinions.comn and other sites like it. Its one thing to hear what people who sell the camera boast it can do, but to hear from an actual consumer, who owns the product, its time well spent reading their reviews.

You definitely get what you pay for. Just like SLR lenses. If the $1400 lens didn't have advantages over it's $75 sibling, who would pay the premium?

The site I went to most often when searching for my digicam was http://www.dpreview.com

In addition to consumer reviews, they test a lot of the cameras themselves, and post the results. They test color accuracy, resolution, etc and show the test shots they took. They also have the specs for most cameras, and the ability to compare them side-by-side.
