Give a kid a camera

Article: Give a kid a camera

Quote: "Don't know what to do with your boy for the summer? Can't afford to send your girl to camp at $150 per three-day session but want something creative for her to do on the break from school? Here's what you do: Give them cameras. Digital cameras. Nearly every electronics and department store has them, and they're less than the lunch money you'd have to dish out for camp. Not to mention that the kids will have more to show for themselves than a chocolate-stained T-shirt or the ketchup drippings on their sneakers."

Comments: I think this is a great idea for those of us that have children. The author makes a good point that kids, armed with a camera, not only helps them develop a creative skill, but also allows us to see the world through their eyes - a great idea that many parents, especially with the countless "cheap but good" digital cameras out there, should try with their kids for the summer.

Great idea! I wish I were growing up now, and my parents would do that for me. For a child with the attention span of three seconds, its an excellent idea. Your pictures are there immediately, so theres no keeping them "entertained" for an hour while theyre being printed.

I know... I wish my parents had done something like this... I guess it's sort of like piano lessons or something, except it gives the kids a little more free reign.

I have given this a lot of thought since my first child was born. I don't want to push them into photography (or anything else) but I am planning to definitely encourage photography with both of them.

Most schools require some kind of art education, so why not get them exposed as soon as they're able to handle a camera?

Hehe,if your giving the kid a film camera, between teh film and developing, it could cost way more than camp. And if you dont caugh up the money for it, then its not much point cuz the kid cant use it.

But with a digital camera this makes sense, if you get one of those cheap toy ones that have poor resolution. Cuz you konw the camera will get broken or lost eventually. :0).

But if you got your own darkroom and bulkloader, then perhaps teach them darkroom stuff. :0).

Exactly... even if you get them a cheap digital camera, it's a great learning experience for them... (hey, I've got an old Sony Mavica fd-73 I want to get rid of that would be perfect for this! )

Is there a grant out there?

The art teacher at our school would love to be able to give 5th grade children at our school each a camera to do a photography unit. Any ideas?

I know of a couple of schools that have 4-5 cheap, not high quality digital cameras that students take home for a couple of days, then upload the photos at school, and they take turns with them...

I believe she was looking for grant ideas for disposable cameras. It'd be nice if it were possible to have nicer ones to take home....not sure that is workable at our public elementary school.

I dont have a clue where I seen this website, but it explains how to make a paper camera that uses 35mm film. It was created in a country *think near russia* that didnt have much money so people improvised and came up with a way to make a light tight paper camera that could be used to take pictures. Pretty much a fancy pin hole camera.

Could do something like that to each them the basics and maybe even develop b&w film.
