Themed Photo Contests...

We're thinking of starting some "themed" photo contests here @ PhotographyCorner... For example, for one contest, it could be something as simple as a "waterfall shot" or could be as unique as a shot of an animal with water, rocks, and a plastic pale in the background. How long should each "contest" run for? 2 weeks? 1 month? How long would people need for something like this? How would we do the voting for winners and whatnot?

I think it's a great idea, and 2 weeks should be enough. Don't make to complex themes since some might not have time to do huge planning, and we want everyone to have a chance.
About the voting I have an idea. Make a new thread for each theme. When the theme is presented all who wants to enter the contest just upload their pictures in that thread. When the time is up you add a poll which contains all the contributions that where uploaded on time. It's a little work for you Tim, but I think it'll work.

Yeah, I was thinking of doing it somewhat like that... I don't mind doing a little extra work if it makes the community happy.

Two weeks should be enough, as long as the contest themes aren't so tight that there's no wiggle room. I'd say stay away from both extremes, but do give enough latitude for creativity.

If you're thinking of, say, "light" as a theme, you might want to break it down and make several contests in a row about light. You could have a "Topic of the Month" and both contests are a variation on that theme.

Or from your example of an animal with water, rocks and a plastic pail, maybe make the shot have at least 1/2 of the elements you list, plus the main subject.

It might be good to stay away from gimmick or "equipment-heavy" shots since not everyone who might be interested will have access to, say, studio floods, 2nd curtain sync, etc.

I will keep it fairly simple for sure... maybe every once and a while, through in some tougher ones to keep it interesting. I will keep equipment in mind...

Well, not necessarily simple, but straightforward.

I've been to some sites that do contests, and the contest rules are so vague that it was almost impossible to judge the entries based on the stated rules.

I've also seen the opposite, where the rules were so restrictive that nobody entered.

I wouldn't mind a few tougher, more challenging contests to put the old creative genes to work.

I'm certainly open to suggestions as to what type of things you have found that work well.

Well, I never said I was gonna be helpful!

It's hard to explain. You need to make sure that there is room in the rules for creativity, but at the same time make sure that voters don't have to spend 10 minutes deciding if photo #2 fits the criteria.

For instance, using just an idea such as "Negative Space" for a contest might be a bit vague. Some people's idea of negative space might be simply that the background is blurred out. Others might think that negative space has to be completely blank. The images that don't match the viewer's idea of "Negative Space" won't be graded as high as those that do.

Here are some contests I've seen recently that I thought worked pretty well (tho I didn't enter any of them ) :

Group Portraits
Silhouettes
Buildings at Night
Motion
Technology
