Calling all photojournalists!

Help me please! I'm a journalism major in school and I'm trying to get together an independent study for photojournalism, as there is no course offered in this (they offered it once a few years ago and only 3 people signed up - therefore, it was cancelled), though myself and one other student are really interested in doing this. We can do it except that for the fact that we have to put it ALL together. So: please tell me things you studied while in school or if you have suggestions as to a course content or ideas or anything to help, I would really appreciate it! This class would be heavily concentrated on photography more than anything else, as from what I've read there's a lot more involved with PJ programs than just learning how to take a good photo, but we only have a semester to do this. Thanks everyone in advance!

No, that's great - I appreciate it! The class is geared towards not only to photo techniques, but to also real-world experience as a photojournalist (ie, one assignment would be we follow a foreign exchange student around during a typical day for them, photographing them and writing about their experiences in an essay). If you would expand on how the class is structured, that would be great! Thanks again!
