The little fishing boat

Canon 350d
Sigma 10-20mm
Shot in RAW.

ISO 100
Shutter: 1/80sec
Aperture: f/10
Focal length: 10mm

I have processed this a little with some layers and masks to bring up the detail in the sky and adjust the contrast in the beach/shingle/boat areas:

Here is the original - with no alterations at all:

Let me know your thoughts on the original shot and the processing.

Thanks,

Andy

The original is just a neat boat on a beach... one of those picture that you'd look at and say "Yup... it's a boat on a beach... kay... whatever.." It's kind of drab, nothing really calls to me. The finished photo (post processing) is great! The colors are vibrant and really draw me in. While the boat immediate grabs your attention saying "I'm the subject!" there's plenty going on with the background to keep you interested between the colors of the sky, the shadows on the beach, even the houses in the distance are now more interesting. I do however have on minor thing I would change if this were mine to change (AKA just my opinion). There's a small orange ball type thing in the bottom right corner.. it seems out of place, doesn't work with the color scheme, sticks out... etc. I'm thinking removing it might be something to ponder. Other than that this was done great! Nice work!

Thanks Patman,

The beauty of RAW I think, managed to recover the shot after not metering properly!!

This just sweeps you right into the frame, andy, power in the sky, tension in the rope, like how the flags have become black silhouettes in the edited version. Very nice indeed.

You know what: you should have posted the "original" above, and the "processed" version below. As it is, I saw the "processed" first, and thought it was one of the greatest shots I'd seen in a while (great colors, great composition, great... well, you know: everything). I ten scrolled down to see a shot I simply couldn't have cared much for, as pretty much nothing was about to compete with the shot above. Trying very hard to appreciate the "original" "for what it is," "on its own," I can, at best, say, "it's nice." There's nothing special there; no "pop," no draw. If nothing else, you can use this shot as a spring-board to a promising career in photo-editing-software classes: "before"... "AFTER!" An amazing job — great work.
