1) The Month After

Things have finally calmed down a little bit after the craziness that was the PhotographyCorner.com 2006 Photograph of the Year contest. Overall, it was a HUGE success. Take a look at some of the numbers collected during the contest: over 700 new members, 170,000 visitors, 3.5 Million pageviews, 7,112 votes, more than 25,000 unique visitors to the voting threads, 60,000 unique visitors to the contest pages, 12,000 inbound links to the contest. From all that, we had 135 qualifying entries, 15 Round 1 voting threads, 15 finals, and 10 winners. Oh, and who could forget the $14,000 in prizes? Woohoo! Gotta like them apples! After all that, I need a nap (like a February-long nap). While the Photograph of the Month contests and Contest Corner Challenge contests won't have $14,000 up for grabs each time, we've got some great sponsors lined up for upcoming contests, with prizes valued in the $400-$700 range for all of them. There's still a lot of work and progress going on around the Corner (which I'll cover a bit later), and to keep up on all of it, you'll want to make sure you subscribe and read the new Corner Blog (which I'll cover a bit later, too). Anyways, enough from me, let's get down to the rest of the newsletter.

2) Sponsor: BIGFolio

I'm sure you've all already heard of BIGFolio, so I don't really need to talk much about them, right? Oh wait, you've NEVER heard of BIGFolio before? Have you been living under a rock or something? Well, first thing's first. Go to http://www.bigfolio.com and check them out. Go ahead. I'll wait for you. Ok. You had a chance to look it over? By looking at their site, you'll have observed that they're a web design and hosting company for professional photographers who provide photographers with stunning designs, an intuitive administration tool, reliable hosting, and the best customer support in the industry. They're sponsoring the February, March and April 2007 Photograph of the Month contests here on the Corner by offering the winner a choice of one of their Standard web site templates and a year of free site hosting (BIG Folio website templates allow you to add your logo, change site colors, add/remove pages and text, add/remove galleries and images, and more! The template and 12 months of hosting is a $660 value - just ask Andy who already won a site from BIGFolio in the February PotM). Doesn't it make you want to win one? Go to http://www.bigfolio.com for more information on how to get your own BIG Folio.

3) A Closer Look at the 2006 PotY

So if you've been around the Corner over the past couple of months, you're well aware of the BIG Photograph of the Year contest we had running during December & January. With all the craziness around the Corner during the contest, you might have missed some of the pertinent links. Good thing we've got this newsletter thingy. Here are the links that you shouldn't have missed:

4) Have You Checked out the Corner Photo Galleries?

Of course you have. But have you checked them out lately? All the Contest Corner Challenge Galleries are now live, as are the Photograph of the Month Galleries. There are currently over 1,200 photographs in the Contest Corner Challenge Galleries, the Photograph of the Month Galleries, the Premiere Projects Galleries and the Photograph of the Year Galleries, and closing in on 10,000 photographs in all of the galleries. We've now got ALL the Contest Corner Challenge Galleries done, as well as the Photograph of the Month Galleries. By the end of the month, we'll be all caught up adding the Premiere Project photos to the Galleries. If you haven't checked out the community contest galleries, check them out:

5) What About The Corner Blog?

What? You haven't checked out the Corner Blog yet? What's up with that? It's been there for almost 2 months, with over 60 posts. You can get there by clicking on the big "blog" button at the top of the site, or even go straight there by going to, yup, you guessed it, http://www.photographycorner.com/blog (who would have thought?!). Why would you want to go there? Well, if you want to keep up with what's going on around the Corner (contests, winners, special polls, discussions) and want to be a part of the community by giving your input, the Corner Blog is a great place to start. In the past month, we've discussed the Corner Chatroom (yes, we have a chatroom... look for more updates about it on the blog), new camera announcements, rebates, and even a new weekly/occasional column by Amy Renfrey. In the next month or so, I'll be writing my own weekly column as well. I could write and write about all the stuff on the blog, but the best place for you to learn about the Corner Blog is to actually go to the Corner Blog: http://www.photographycorner.com/blog - go there, and click on the big, orange RSS button to subscribe (for those of you that don't have an RSS Reader select the email option, and for those of you that do, just click on the icon for your feed reader and TADA!). If you can't see that great big, huge, gigantic, ginormous orange RSS icon, you can cheat and just click on this link: http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/email...?feedId=613064. Now you have no excuse.

6) "Noteworthy Notables"

Noteworthy Notables is the section of the newsletter to catch you up on some stuff that you might have missed around the Corner in the past month. Section 3 and 4 are basically mini Noteworthy Notables, but here are a couple more, just to keep this section alive:

Articles By Amy: High Dynamic Range In Digital Photography
http://www.photographycorner.com/blo...al-photography
One of the articles in the "Articles By Amy" series on HDR techniques.

Corner Compilation #1
http://www.photographycorner.com/blo...-compilation-1
A bunch of photography news thrown at you in 1 big blog post.

The Corner Chat Room - Thoughts?
http://www.photographycorner.com/blo...-room-thoughts
We're trying to give the Corner Chat Room a little more life. Vote in the poll and give us your thoughts. Scheduled chats will be starting soon!

How do you define "Critique"?
http://www.photographycorner.com/for...ad.php?t=25142
A pretty old thread, but one worth reading through if you use the Critiques Corner either to post up photos or to offer a critique.

Sponsors for the PhotographyCorner.com 2006 Photograph of the Year Contest
http://www.photographycorner.com/for...ad.php?t=52965
If you haven't had a chance to thank the sponsors of the 2006 PotY contest, here's a thread for you to express your gratitude.

Vote for the CCC#30: In the Water Winning Photograph
http://www.photographycorner.com/for...ad.php?t=54520
Voting ends tomorrow, with the winner announced on February 19th. Look for CCC#31 to be announced on February 20th!

7) What's Coming Around the Corner

Phew, we're almost at the end. The Corner has been chugging along at quite a pace since the PotY contest - and there always seems to be more, just around the Corner. If you haven't noticed (and that's because you haven't been reading the Corner Blog), there's a new "donation" button on the main page of the Corner (bottom, right). If you love the Corner like so many of us do, feel free to make a donation ($2, $5, $20, $100, $1000, whatever) to the site to keep it running and improving. In the same spirit, you may also consider becoming a Premiere Member ( http://www.photographycorner.com/premiere-membership ). In fact, until the end of the month, lifetime Premiere Memberships are HALF PRICE!!! February is a short month, so make sure to take advantage of this 50% deal before the calendar strikes March. Coming soon, look for more product reviews (I've hired on our very own Scott U. to do some research and writing for the Corner), as well as a super comprehensive glossary that will be available FREE on the site, as well as in PDF e-book form for a small fee (hey, you can't bring your computer with you everywhere... yet). Look for the product reviews to start popping up in the Resource Center starting in a couple of weeks, and look for the glossary to start growing sometime in March. You can already check out the place where the glossary will go (though there's pretty much just filler text there now ( http://www.photographycorner.com/glossary ).

Last newsletter I asked where you wanted to take the newsletter... while the vote was close, it seems that HTML or plain text was the way to go. Maybe not in time for the March issue, but sometime before the summer months look for this newsletter to go HTML. OOooooo! All pretty!

Anyways, enough from me. You've got blogs to subscribe to, galleries to view and upload photos to (and comment on), BigFolio's to check out, contests to vote on, photos to critique, sponsors to thank, oh, and you should probably go out and take some photographs too...

See you around the Corner,
Tim L. Walker
