1) First Issue of the Year

Wow. This marks the first newsletter of 2008 here at the Corner. For those of you who have just recently joined the site, welcome to the Corner! There's a lot more to this place than the SWEET 2007 Photograph of the Year contest, you know! PhotographyCorner is almost 4 years old, and our forums are about to hit the half-a-million post mark... WOW! Over 11,000 members, over 100,000 photos uploaded, almost 100 contests... We've become pretty big over the years. The Corner Blog, galleries, articles, tutorials, product reviews, a photography directory... it's a pretty big site! Did you know Google has indexed over 800,000 pages of PhotographyCorner?!? Anyways, if this is your first newsletter, enjoy! We send one out once a month, in the middle of the month - kinda an update/recap of what's going on around the Corner. If you're a long-time member of the Corner, thanks for sticking around and making the Corner such an awesome online destination for photographers all around the world! Here's to a great 2008 around the Corner! Cheers!!

2) Sponsor: VueScan from Hamrick Software

Hamrick Software is the leading developer for 3rd party software for scanners. Supporting over 750 scanners and with over 50 advanced features for scanners, VueScan has over 160,000 customers worldwide. VueScan makes your existing scanner work as well as a new one, is quick and easy to use, and you can continue using it if you buy a new scanner. VueScan is available for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux, including Vista and Leopard. Says Ed Hamrick, President of Hamrick Software. "Most recently, we have been getting many new customers from users of Leopard and Windows Vista, since many vendor scanner drivers don't work on Leopard and Windows Vista. New customers also buy VueScan because it provides higher quality scans and has many more features than the software that comes with most scanners." He continued, "We work closely with the major scanner manufacturers, since they realize that their own software does not meet all their customer requirements. No other company in the world supports as many scanners as we do, as a result VueScan has been downloaded more than 5 million times. VueScan offers a full range of advanced features; including options for scanning faded slides and prints and automatically adjusting images to optimum color balance that reduces the need to manually do it in Photoshop. It includes built-in IT8 color calibration of scanners, producing colors that look true to life, batch scanning and other advanced and powerful scanning and productivity features, including PDF output. VueScan is available in two editions, Standard Edition ($39.95 USD) and Professional Edition ($79.95). The Professional Edition adds unlimited free upgrades, advanced IT8 color calibration and support for raw scan files. Multi-user licenses are available.

A fully functional, trial copy of VueScan can be downloaded from http://www.hamrick.com/ For a detailed listing of VueScan features, see: http://www.hamrick.com/abo.html

3) 2007 Photograph of the Year Update

Well, if you've been hanging around the Corner the past month, you've definitely felt the buzz in the air (is there "air" around a website?). The PhotographyCorner.com 2007 Photograph of the Year contest has already been a great success. We've seen tens of thousands of visitors come visit the contest and 160 entries (that's almost 20% more than last year). We have 12 amazing sponsors (SmugMug.com, PsPrint.com, MastersofWeddingPhotography.com, ScanCafe.com, FrameDestination.com, DigitalAnarchy.com, ArcadiaSoftware.com, Photo-To-DVD.com, OnOneSoftware.com, TribecaLabs.com, Lensbabies.com & Lowepro.com) who are offering up over $20,000 in prizes to the top 10 winners of the contest. And the fun hasn't even begun yet!! The first round of voting starts tomorrow (January 18th, 200, and the second round of voting will begin on the 23rd, with the winners announced on January 30th! Keep yourself subscribed to the blog to get up-to-date information on the contest as it progresses: http://feeds.feedburner.com/photographycornerblog

4) Community Decisions

One of the (many) things that sets the Corner apart from other photography sites is that we make decisions as a community as to the direction of the site and community. Right now, we've got 2 questions that we're looking for the community vote on. The first is "Do You Want More Email from the Corner?" and the second is "How Many (Contest Wins) Is Too Many?" The first one deals with voting and contest reminder emails - how many do you want? More or less? The second question is about limiting winners of our contests so to give others a better chance of winning. We're letting the community vote and discuss the options for the next week or so. Here are the links to the questions and the polls:

5) CCC & PotM Updates

In addition to our big Photograph of the Year contest, we also hold monthly Photograph of the Month (PotM) contests, and every three weeks a Contest Corner Challenge (CCC). Our most recent PotM was our January 2008 contest, which saw ybounh win his second PotM contest with his photo titled "Cavell Alpenglow." Voting for the February 2008 PotM starts in about a week. You may be wondering, "How can I get one of my photographs into the PotM contests?" Well, the only way to get your photograph in the Photograph of the Month contest is to have it nominated by a Premiere Member. Only Premiere Members can nominate photographs (for more information on Premiere Membership, visit www.photographycorner.com/premiere-membership). From the nominations, I narrow down the field to 10-15 photographs, and the community votes.

As for the Contest Corner Challenges, they are announced every 3 weeks and ANYONE can enter. Make sure to check out the "rules & regulations" before entering each contest: http://www.photographycorner.com/for...read.php?t=494. Since the last newsletter, we have announced the winner of CCC#43: Holiday Alphabetography, Karen, with her photo montage of the word "JOY." Check it out here: http://www.photographycorner.com/con...lphabetography. Currently, we are voting on CCC#44: Photolfaction (which asked you to photograph something that looks so good, or bad, that you can smell it). Voting ends at approximately 3:00pm EST, Sunday, January 20th, 2008 (8:00pm GMT). CCC#45 will be announced on Tuesday, January 22nd (but you'll have to wait to see what the challenge will be until Tuesday!).

6) "Noteworthy Notables"

For those that are relatively new to the Corner, the Noteworthy Notables have been a steadfast section here in the Corner Newsletter. It gives a brief run-down of the cool threads, new articles and blog posts, and other "worth checking out" stuff that has happened here on the Corner.

7) Busy Month

January is always a busy month around the Corner - it's the start of a new year, and, of course, the Photograph of the Year contest. There are always a bunch of new members (who joined for the PotY, but stay for the community), so take some time out of your busy month to welcome all the new members to the Corner. We also send out more reminder emails than normal this time of year, as the PotY contest has several voting rounds, so keep that in mind (just in case my reminder emails get annoying).

Thanks for making the Corner such a great photography destination on the Internet. I appreciate all you do to make this place so freakin' awesome. I look forward to continuing to grow and make this site better throughout 2008 and beyond.

See you around the Corner,
Tim L. Walker
