CNET to offer music download site for unsigned artists. Personally, I strongly believe that music download will be free/compulsory licensed eventually. Meanwhile, businesses need to find a way to generate revenue. Is CNET executing this successfully? Can they create a profitable business doing this?

I think CNET is doing the only thing it really can, at this point. The bought mp3.com, and really just running it the same way mp3.com did... It's not a huge money-maker for them... but it's positioning themselves in the market... Pay-for-download is getting to be the big thing, and CNET is just getting their name out there. I know some artists that previous used mp3.com, and not only did they make some money off it, but I know they had to pay mp3.com some coin as well... a % of their gross from the site, I believe... plus their's advertising on the site.

I used to listen to "indie" stuff on mp3.com... it will be interesting to see what happens with the site with CNET at the helm.
