1) Keep On Keepin' On

Whether photography is your full time profession, or a part time job, or a hobby, or maybe you're even just a beginner, we all have one thing in common: we love taking photos. But with any other hobby/passion/job, there are always new equipment, new techniques, new obstacles and new distractions. It seems like every week, there's a new camera or new lens we would love to have, there are dozens of cool, new techniques, photoshop actions and styles to explore and learn. But we don't all have the money to buy all the new photography toys, nor do we always have the time to learn, practice and perfect all the new techniques, let alone just get out there and take some photographs. Then, of course, there are the many distractions of life: gotta wash the dishes, feed the dog, take out the garbage, take the kids to hockey practice, shovel the snow, mow the lawn, watch TV, read the paper, wash the car, do your taxes, etc, etc, etc. It's easy to get discouraged, or just plain ol' overwhelmed with life, and photography gets pushed to the back burner. You meant to grab the camera on the way out the door, but forgot it. You brought the camera with you, but you just wanted to relax, so the camera stayed in the bag. There are tons of excuses. But don't you owe it to yourself (and your camera - and the people that love your photography) to make a point of bringing it out as often as you can. You love photography after all, right? Sometimes it may seem like "work" instead of play to go out and take some photos... but don't you love it when you just get out there and do it? There's something special about getting in behind the lens and capturing the world forever in a single moment - a single snapshot. Do yourself a favor, and don't forget the camera next time you go out. Make some time for you, your camera, and your photography. You never know what moments are out there just waiting to be captured by you...

3) Welcome the New Mod Squad

If you've been following the Corner Blog lately (and if you haven't, what's up with that?) you'll know that we've been searching for a few good moderators to help out around the Corner. We had a ton of applications (which is awesome that so many of you want to help out around the Corner!), and we've "hired" a bunch of new mods. We now have a solid group of 18 moderators around the Corner: CornflakeGirl (returning mod), GREAPER (returning mod), DDAY (returning mod), Dave Noel (returning mod), Tyger (returning mod), ohenry (Premiere Corner Extraordinaire), Karen (new mod), Oneof42 (new mod), Erik B (new mod), Scott U. (was a mod previously, but is now a new mod), Jewel (new mod), grif04 (new mod), ZHeng (new mod), *ClicK* (new mod), Nikon_Mario (new mod), digital2006 (new mod), ndroo (new mod), and newlove (new mod). Mods help with everything from moving posts to the correct forum (ie. a photo of your car doesn't belong in the children forum... know what I mean?), to policing the forum for spam and posts that may be a little out of line, to helping me out with side projects (like the up-coming Alphabetography project), to running the Premiere Corner, the Caption Contests and the Scavenger Hunts, to taking care of business when I'm out of town or not able to be online. I may be the "admin," but the mods make this place go. So head on over to the forums and congratulate (and thank!) the new mods: http://www.photographycorner.com/for...ad.php?t=70961.

4) We're Well On Our Way

I'm sure you've noticed the Corner running a little slowly lately - sometimes, it's not even loading at all (not often, but more often than it should). This place is just out growing our server. It happens - especially to sites that grow as quickly as the Corner. So... we need a new server. It's as simple as that (or about half of you could just stop coming to the Corner... hehe... just kidding). Instead of charging a membership fee like a lot of other photography sites do, we've decided to do a one-time fundraiser. If you don't have the cash, you don't have to donate, but if you do, it would be a great way to give back to the community. We've got a goal of $2,500, and we're already almost half way there! We're giving away lots of prizes, from PhotographyCorner pens, to gift certificates, to an awesome Lowepro Stealth Reporter D550 AW camera bag!! Drop by the fundraising page to see how our goal is progressing, who has already donated, in-depth info on the fundraiser, and info on how you can help out the Corner: http://www.photographycorner.com/2008-server-fundraiser.

5) CCC & PotM Updates

Here are the contest updates since our last newsletter: Contest Corner Challenge #46: Facial Expressions and come and gone, with lucipaz coming away with the victory (her FOURTH CCC win!) with her photograph titled "Suspicious." The March 2008 Photograph of the Month was awarded to Andy with her photograph "I See You!" We also announced our second Digital Darkroom Contest Corner Challenge and have received 31 great entries - check out and vote on the entries here: http://www.photographycorner.com/for...ad.php?t=71148.

6) "Noteworthy Notables"

For those that are new to the Corner (or for those of you that have never read this far down in a newsletter before), the Noteworthy Notables have been a steadfast section here in the Corner Newsletter. It gives a brief run-down of the cool threads, new articles and blog posts, and other "worth checking out" stuff that has happened here on the Corner.

2007 Photograph of the Year Galleries - Final Update
It's been almost a month, but in case you missed it, you can now check out all the entries, along with their usernames, for the 2007 PotY contest.

As If You Didn't Know Already...

Ever wonder what was in the Premiere Corner? Want to participate in the Premiere Projects, or maybe you just want those orange cameras under your username - get all the info on Premiere Membership here.

7) What's Next?

The Photograph of the Year contest is well behind us (though only 9 more months until the next one!), new members are joining the Corner every day, more and more people are reading the Corner Blog, we've got lots of articles and tutorials to add to the Corner Resource Center (yes, I'm a little behind at getting those up... I'll get there, I promise), the Photograph of the Month and the Contest Corner Challenges are getting bigger and better - so what's next for the Corner? Where do we go from here? We've got a couple of neat projects on the go, and with the help of the new mods, we should get them out there sooner rather than later. I don't want to give away all of the surprises, but one of them has to do with shopping! Hopefully within the next month or two, we'll roll out both of the new sections of the Corner... I can hardly wait - I know you guys (and girls!) are going to love it.

See you around the Corner,
Tim L. Walker
