The Travellers Thread

Welcome to the Travellers Thread!

www.photographycorner.com has users from all over the world. USA, Europe the Middle East and Many More.

Ive created this thread for ye guys to ask some questions before you go traveling to such destinations. If you are going for business, pleasure for long or short periods of time and would like to ask some questions from a native, here is the place to do it.

So lets say one of ye are taking a weekend break to the Rockies in Colorado or a Business Trip to London or even a look at Ireland (thats me!)
Landing in Dublin? Want to go see some Irish countryside? You might ask me or anyone else from wherever they might be from where the Hot Spots are, where would i go if i wanted to see some of this. a heard of walking down a main road kinda stuff ? Ive seen it quiet a few times i tell ya! I would give you some helpful hints for where to find these places in Ireland to the best of my knowledge.

You might only have a short span of time and if you want some good direction for some great photos, ask the locals!

Just state what country you are going to and what you like to photograph mainly, although im sure it being a trip somewhere else you'd be taking photos of everything! But for even just some helpful info for you, heres the place to ask.

Bringing all of us a little closer around the corner.
  • Make sure to post well in advance of you're travels for people to be able to assist you.

  • Make Sure to Title you're post for which destination you are going to or commenting on and for who.

Photography Holidays

(As a bit of background, I am a Very Amateur Photographer who has recently decided to buy a DSLR camera, when I have the money, and take things more seriously.)

I am lucky, being where I am, as I have colonial cities, modern cities, Andean villages, rainforests, mountains, volcanoes, beaches, Caribbean islands, forests, lakes and deserts all relatively close-by. (The presence of marxist guerrilla rebel drug-dealing-kidnappers also relatively close-by decreases my luckiness, but no-where's perfect).

I am also lucky that, being a school-teacher, I have many more weeks' holiday than the average mere mortal.

You all know where I'm going with this...

When a man has time off, a camera, and things & places to take pictures off - he starts packing his bag. The same, of course, would apply for a woman.

Next July the summer holidays begin (which is a silly term as I live in a tropical country), and I will be packing my bags. First stop will be San Andres - a Caribbean island. Then, Cartagena - a colonial city on the Caribbean coast. Both are very photogenic, although I will be with some visiting family members, so photography will have to be balanced with being social (it is not easy to mix both).

After that, my real photography holidays can begin...

I am thinking of Leticia, a small village slap bang in the amazon, and on the Colombian/Peruvian/Brazilian border. From there, one can take excursions out into the rainforest, boats down the river, canopy walks, etc... If National Geographic is anything to go by, there are more than a couple of things to take pictures of in the Amazon rainforest. Or so I am led to believe. My first ever holiday devoted to taking photos - cool!

So - I will go by myself, with camera, tripod, every type of lense imaginable - and some Very Waterproof bags and clothing.

But wait, what exactly is a "photography holiday"? To be honest, I made the term up. I presume that such a thing exists. I presume that people do, in fact, go on holiday with the sole objective of taking pictures - and they do so alone, as photography is, generally speaking, a fairly solitary activity. I presume that they "set up" in a cafe, plaza, or beach somewhere, and hang around for hours taking pictures opportunistically (is that a word?) I presume that they spend hours (or days or weeks) walking around analysing their surroundings, taking hundres of thousands of photos (many of exactly the same thing, but in a slightly different way). Much like hunters and sex-tourists, photographers go on specialist holidays to indulge their passion too, right?

This is, at least, what I plan to do - and I expect I am not the first one ever to do so. So here come the questions - addressed to those, perhaps, who have actually been on a photography holiday.

Have you been on a photography holiday? Where? How was it?

Might it actually be a bit lonely, strange and sad to go somewhere by yourself to just take pictures of things? Might you go a little loopy after the 3rd day?

Is the best strategy to have your camera on you at all times, but just doing normal holiday things, taking pictures of things as they arise? Like, say, do a boat trip, see an anaconda, and think "Nice! I'll take a picture of that, then have a beer..."

Or is it better to "go on a mission", so to speak, having the camera switched on and lens-cap off at all times, and you in a constant state of alertness - eyes squinted, knees slightly bent, with finger hovering over the button, for hours on end, as you hunt & stalk your prey?

Any experiences welcome!

I grew up in MB and visit there all the time. Have properties there.

What is it you like to do?

There is a new theme park, Hard Rock Adventure Park, or something like that opening up soon.
