Neutral Density Filters...

One of the best investments I have made this past year was a relatively inexpensive set of ND filters. Using these will let you effectively "stop down" the exposure while maintaining a shallow depth of field, when that look is what you are going for.

I have also used them to achieve long exposures for motion blur effects in high light conditions.
