Re: Photography on Display

Love the sentiment behind the article...any advice on how to approach the local coffee shop, or who to ask for in a place like Starbucks? I figure the manager would be the first step, but is there someone else we should approach about such a thing? I think it's the who and the how that get me stuck the most.

Starbucks is a tough one because they do not "franchise" their stores and each store has a set decor. You would have to write to the head-office. The local Starbucks manager does not have the weight to approve anyone hanging photos in their place.

On the other hand you could try your local mom & pop eatery or local chain restaurants by talking to their manager. Google it and see if the chain is a franchise (which means that particular restaurant has an owner. Talk to the owner and see if he'd be open to displaying your photos on their walls). Talk to doctor's offices and see if they might be interested. See who the head doctor is; the one who calls the shots at that office; and talk to them.

Re: Photography on Display

While I applaud the article in pointing out the value of the print, before you are running to your local coffee shop or other vendor, take some time to get your work evaluated and not just by people on a forum.

Create a portfolio and get to know some of the people at your local art museum (a photographic museum if possible) Join classes and seminars and have your work evaluated. Be prepared to have some pretty thick skin, because your work may be good, even above average, but that does not mean it will sell.

Don't give up, keep honing your craft. Take classes, learn new techniques then when you have reached the point where you are getting attention, then you may become marketable and be hung in small galleries, stores, restaurants etc....

Its a crowded market and you need to stand out as outstanding to succeed.
