I'm just now learning about aperture,shutter speed and setting the ISO. I shot in P-Mode. I'm beginning to use Manual Mode. Not to mention the fact I needed a low light lens. 2.8 I'm just excited about being involved with the photography corner. I thought I'd share it. I promise I will do better next time. Karen Moderator Registered: December 2005 Posts: 1,562 Thu April 10, 2008 6:50am Heya Deerhunter.... few comments. No need to laugh here because you are well on your way. First off, thank you for sharing your exif revealing the lens and settings used. This is great, cuz it helps us learn and makes it easier to respond to your posts. Ok.... 800 ISO - you have minimal noise which is very good. Some cameras react better at higher ISO's than others (I want the D300 for that reason but can't rationalize the expenditure when my dream is for the D3.... Santa, can you hear me?) I am guessing no flash was used right? The composition is great. It is a tight crop yet I don't feel as if I am missing any major elements such as a cropped off ear or other bits. So, good job. I would consider cropping out the part in the curtain (dark strip on the side). The noise from the high ISO is most visible there and the dark is a distraction from your main focal point. There is one tiny spec over his left eyelid. We can't help those irregularities, but I would clone that out. This image reminds me of a story about when my sister drew a picture of my son. He had blond hair and was out in a field. I commented to her that she put green tints in his hair, and she said to me that is a natural reaction from the reflection off the plants around him. In your photograph the gold curtain behind Taylor casts strong reflections back onto him with warm tones that are clearly visible on the right side whereas the stage lights from the left cast cooler tones. It is noticeable in the buttons on his coat. This is not a problem, but is a good example of the various tones of light and their effects. There is a flare of sorts running down his left shoulder from the reflection. If you cropped out the curtain I am betting that gold strip would be cropped too or at least have less attention to it. Just my thoughts, and others might feel differently. How close were you to Taylor? Did you have a press pass, and did you have any troubles bringing your camera in with you? I have never photographed entertainers before, and wondering minds want to know. Good job overall. Oh, one more minor point... if you reduce the size of your image just a wee bit, we can view the entire image without needing to scroll from side to side. Cheers!
