Really like this christina, lovely color and exposure, great background and a real character face as well. Very nicely composed image.

I think it could be improved much better if the shadow on the face could be lightened up. You could've used fill flash or reflector, I think the sun was too strong for your grandpa from the look of his eyes (it may be wrong).
It's a personal opinion that I think u gave too much space on the top and little on the bottom, I don't like the cutting off of his boot.
And the last thing is the highlight of the shirt is blown off.
Please don't take it hard, I tried to give honest and constructive criticism.
Anyway nice work, keep on going and improving.

I like this Christina. There are some things that I think could make this shot better though. I agree on the face shadows and the space on the top. Fill flash would probably take care of the shadows. I would definitely crop some of the space on top and maybe a bit off the left. I'm not as bothered by the short space on the bottom or cutting off the boot. Also, while I appreciate the background and its relationship to who your Grandpa is, I'd prefer to see it less defined so as not to distract from your main subject, your Grandpa. Open up your aperture to decrease your DOF. I'd also like to see the other glove even if he's not wearing it but holding it. Hard to control the blown out shirt and still get the face right so that doesn't bother me but if you're fill flashing for the face you should be able to bring the shirt back in a little better. Some of these things are harder to control when making an impromtu photographs but if you can do some planning ahead and get some cooperation from your Grandpa (don't know how open he would be to more shooting) you could really have some fun and create some great portraits that capture that great rustic character he has.
It's a good pic and understandably carries some sentimental value so I hope you don't take the criticism as anything other than just some feedback from another joe photographer....
