1. Open the photo you want to manipulate in Photoshop.

2. You want to show the grid lines on your photo, so go to ‘View’ > ‘Show’ > ‘Grid’ to bring the grid lines up.

3. Once your document shows the grid lines, go to ‘Edit’ > ‘Preferences’ > ‘Guides’, grids and slices.

4. In the box for working with your gridlines, you want to set the gridlines and subdivisions values to a number that is going to give you an even number of boxes throughout your photo. I’ve set my gridlines and subdivision values to 1.

5. Using the square marquee tool, select a portion inside the gridlines. Go to ‘Image’ > ‘Adjustment’ > ‘Desaturate’, and then move on to the next part in the grid you want to turn into grayscale.

6. Your last step is to add in the actual lines of the grid. Use the line tool make a line that is the width of the photo, using the gridlines on your photo as a guide. I like to make mine about 5 px.

7. After you have one straight line right click in the layers box and duplicate the layer that the line is on enough times to fill all the horizontal lines in the grid. It should start to look something like this:

8. Repeat this process with the vertical grid lines, where it should start to resemble something like this:

9. Once you’ve filled in all your lines, go to ‘View’ > ‘Show’ > ‘Grid’ to uncheck the grid selection, and your done.

You have now added a mosaic effect to your photograph. Play around with the various options presented above to get the exact look that you’re going for.
