Creating a Pencil Drawing from a Photograph in Photoshop Elements
Creating a pencil drawing from a photograph can seem like a daunting task, but if you follow these instructions, you’ll be turning photographs into simulated pencil drawings in no time. This tutorial was created using Photoshop Elements, but it should be easy to figure out the slight differences in both Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro.

2. Next, invert the current layer.

3. Once the layer is inverted, use the grayscale option to turn the layer to grayscale, but make sure you choose the ‘Do not flatten’ option.

4. Now that the top layer is grayscale, select the background layer.

5. Change the layer from ‘Normal’ to ‘Color Dodge’. This should make your photo very light colored - this is to be expected. You can go in and adjust the brightness to make it lighter or darker - just play around with it and use whatever works best for you photo.

6. Next, use the ‘Gaussian Blur Filter’. It generally works best if you use ‘2’, although you can choose between 1-4. Again, this is personal preference - play around with it to see what works best with you picture.

7. Use the ‘Brightness/Contrast’ to adjust your picture to you liking.

8. To change to color of the drawing, change it back to RGB Color and choose the ‘Flatten’ option.

9. Finally, adjust the ‘Hue/Saturation’ bars to your liking.

Once you’ve completed this, you should have a “pencil drawn” looking photograph!
